social: March 2016

Sunday 13th March 2016 saw the first ever Yorkshire Sound Women Network event in Sheffield. The social was held at DINA Venue and Gallery and was attended by nine women with a range of backgrounds, experience and interests.

Following introductions, we discussed and agreed some informal aims for a series of social events to be held more or less monthly in Sheffield:

  • Networking
  • Sharing work and seeking feedback
  • Informal workshops and demos
  • Invited speakers
  • Sharing information via an email list and social media

After this, Laura presented a recent sound installation project called ‘Spatial Resonances’. She writes:

“As part of my Sonic Art MA at the University of Sheffield I was given the chance to work with several architecture students as well as the Sheffield Modernist Society to create a sound installation reflecting Modernism in Sheffield. The Arts Tower stuck out to me as not only one of the most iconic Modernist buildings in the city, but one that has also stood the test of time and still in regular use by staff and students of the University. My installation reflected the history of building together with the regular rhythms of incoming and outgoing students in the entrance area. A dead piano was the centre piece of my work, not only serving as a reverberative body for my recorded sounds of the surrounding area to pass through, but aesthetically to make my installation as iconic as the building it was portraying.”

Finally, Becky introduced her work as a DJ creating mixes using music from retro computer games. You can listen to some of Becky’s mixes at her Mixcloud page.
